In a memorandum order signed by Vice Mayor and Acting Municipal Mayor Romina Rusillon-Sajulga on March 22, the suspension of parties and any similar activities is implemented to emphasize the religious and cultural significance of Good Friday, urging individuals to contemplate its importance.
Sajulga added that this measure also aims to ensure peace and harmony for the residents and visitors of General Luna.
“It is hereby understood that non-compliance by any business establishment shall be considered as a violation of a lawful order which may result in suspension or revocation of its Mayor’s permit,” she stated.
The order explicitly prohibits activities such as disco, karaoke, singing, and dancing contests.
Sajulga instructed the barangay local government, the Philippine National Police in General Luna, and other relevant departments to strictly enforce the directives.
The ban is effective from March 29 on Good Friday until 6 a.m. of Black Saturday.
Ivonnie Dumadag, regional director of the Department of Tourism (DOT) for Caraga, told MindaNews in an interview that they have undergone extensive preparatory measures in anticipation of a surge in tourists, considering its status as the prime destination in the region for both domestic and international travelers.
“Throughout the Holy Week, the DOT regional satellite office in General Luna will remain operational to monitor tourist arrivals and accommodation bookings, oversee key destinations on the island, and address tourists’ concerns,” Dumadag said.
Based on projections by DOT Caraga, it is expected that over 14,904 tourists will visit the island in this year’s Holy Week, indicating a significant increase of 785.56% from the 1,683 tourists recorded in 2023.
The tourism office attributes this increase to enhanced accessibility for local tourists, such as increased frequency of boat trips from the mainland and additional flights from various parts of the country.
Presently, there are between 12 and 14 inbound flights to Sayak Airport in Siargao, originating from Metro Manila, Cebu, Clark, and Davao, varying by the day of the week.
In terms of boat trips, there are at least six daily trips from Surigao City to Dapa port, and an additional two trips from there to Del Carmen. (Ivy Marie Mangadlao / MindaNews)
