SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews/04 December) — Power consumers in Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur were told to brace for a 12-hour blackout on Saturday (Dec. 5).
Bambie Capulong, spokesperson of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines for Northern Mindanao said they will shut off three electric power utilities from 6am-6pm.
Capulong said via text message the 12-hour blackout will affect of the areas serviced by the Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative, Siargao Electric Cooperative and Surigao del Sur Electric Cooperative due to a scheduled maintenance works along Placer-Madrid power lines.
Engr. Narcisco I. Caliao Jr., general manager of Surneco, told MindaNews Friday that only six of the 11 towns serviced by them will be affected.
These are the towns of Sison, Taganaan, Placer, Bacuag, Gigaquit and Claver.
Last November 22, a prolonged blackout in the city drew flak from residents who blamed it on the local power distribution firm.
The outage that hit Surigao City and two towns stretched to 17 hours while those in other affected areas serviced by Surneco, Siarelco and Surseco II only lasted 12 hours.
Caliao admitted that the delayed restoration of power was caused by a technical glitch at one of their substations. (Roel Catoto/MindaNews)
