MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police has activated Task Group EGO, an investigating body that will look into cases of violence committed against elected government officials after the PNP recorded a total of 52 politicians and elected government officials have been attacked during the first five months of the year.
PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa said Task Group EGO shall be responsible for the immediate resolution of all previous violent incidents against elected government officials. “In order to prevent the occurrence of violent incidents that may disrupt the holding of HOPE 2010, there is a need for the PNP to intensify law enforcement, security and public safety operations before, during and after the elections,” Verzosa said. “I still believe that the 2010 elections will be more peaceful than the polls in 2004 and 2007,” said Verzosa.
Verzosa said Task Group EGO, spearheaded by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group is also tasked to initiate appropriate security measures for identified ”high-risk” elected government officials.
