Gunmen kill Basilan city councilor
Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a city councilor of Isabela City, Basilan while he was about to attend an event of the Eagles Club in Zamboanga City Sunday night.
Police said two other barangay chairmen who accompanied the victim were wounded in the attack by two gunmen who later fled on board a motorcycle.
Zamboanga City Police Director Colonel Alexander Lorenzo said Lamitan Councilor Franklyn Galos Tan—who was president of the Association of Barangay Captains in Isabela and chairman of Barangay Seaside—died on the spot while his two companions, barangay chairmen Jaider Jundam of Kaumpurnah-1 and Daryl Jalani of Kaumpurnah-2, were wounded.
Lorenzo said the three victims were about to go inside Puerta del Ciudad Hotel at Vitalino Agan Street when the two suspects fired at them and later fled.
He said the suspects, who were wearing helmets, fled toward Barangay Sta. Maria.
NPA rebel killed in Agusan Norte clash
Army soldiers clashed with a band of 10 New People’s Army rebels and killed one insurgent after an hour of fighting in Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte last Friday.
Lt. Col. Cresencio Gargar, commander of the 29th Infantry Battalion, said the operation was launched after receiving persistent reports from civilians of the presence of the rebels in Barangay Concepcion, 10 kilometers north of Cabadbaran City.
Gargar identified the lone rebel casualty as Leo Salino Mindoro alias “Yolly.” An AK-47 rifle and ammunition was seized from him, according to the report.
2 killed as speeding motorcycle collides with trike
Two persons died after a speeding motorcycle crashed into a tricycle along the national highway in Libungan town, North Cotabato last weekend.
A police report in Libungan identified the victims as John Loyd Calawigan, driver of a Suzuki Raider 150, and Genevieve Villela, 42 years old, passenger of the ill-fated tricycle.
The report said Calawigan was participating in a drag race along the highway when his speeding Suzuki Raider rammed into the tricycle.
Villela’s husband Florante, 44, who drove the tricycle, was in critical condition.
