CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 24 February) – Violence against women and girls remains a pressing issue in the Caraga region, an official said.
Alexander Makinano, Regional Gender and Development Committee chair of the Commission on Population and Development said this can be blamed on gender sensitivity issues among men.
Citing data from the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey (NHDS), Makinano said physical violence remains high in the region with 25.2 percent of Caraga’s women experiencing it in their lifetime.
“This is an increase from 23.7 percent in the 2017 NHDS report,” he said as he urged more interventions from government agencies to address the problem.
He said government agencies should involve more men in government intervention programs to stem the violence against women and girls. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
Wildlife rescue center proposed for Mt. Apo
CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 24 February) – The sighting of an injured warty pig (Sus philippensis) in Mount Apo National Park has pushed government agencies to construct a wildlife rescue and conservation center to protect biodiversity there.
Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro, Mindanao Development Authority Deputy Executive Director said Rep. Rudy Caoagdan (2nd district, North Cotabato) has filed House Bill 7430 to fund and build the wildlife center.
Montenegro said Caoagdan Senator Cynthia Villar filed a similar bill.
The Department of National Environment and Natural Resources said the Mount Apo National Park, established in 1936, is home to the critically endangered Philippine Eagle and other endemic species like monkeys, civet cats, bats and squirrels.
A DENR team managed to get pictures of the rare warty pig, the first time a recording was made on the endangered species in the area. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
