COTABATO CITY (MindaNews / 14 July) – The mayor of South Upi in Maguindanao survived an attempted slay try late Thursday afternoon by still unidentified armed men who fired a rocket-propelled grenade, but missed, while his convoy was cruising Kilometer 28 in neighboring North Upi town.
Chief Insp. Ronald de Leon, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said they received reports that first-term Mayor Reynalbert Insular “was ambushed but managed to survive.

Senior Supt. Nickson Muksan, provincial police director, said the incident happened at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
De Leon said police escorts of Insular managed to fire back.
South Upi town is considered a hot spot during elections because of intense political rivalry.
The new mayor ran as an independent candidate.
