ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/18 July) – Some 250 individuals were displaced and three suspected rebels were captured in two separate clashes this week in Zamboanga del Norte, police said.
Senior Supt. James Mejia, Zamboanga del Norte police director said three alleged New People’s Army rebels were captured following an encounter almost 4:00 p.m. Wednesday with soldiers in the boundary between Barangays Carupay and Fimagas in Katipunan town.
Mejia said the firefight ensued when the soldiers spotted at least 18 NPAs while they were conducting security operation.
He did not identify the alleged rebels except to say that two of them are males and the other one is a female.
He added the three were placed under investigation.
On Tuesday, some 250 individuals fled their homes when a clash erupted between suspected NPA rebels and policemen belonging to the Provincial Public Safety Battalion in Barangay San Francisco, Sergio Osmeña town.
The evacuees sought refuge at the town’s covered court and were immediately provided assistance by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
A suspected NPA rebel was killed while a policeman was wounded in the encounter. (MindaNews)
