ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/14 January) – The Malaysian government deported on Friday a total of 109 Filipinos illegally staying in Malaysia.
The deportees, who arrived here on Saturday evening aboard a passenger-cargo ferry, comprised the first batch of Filipinos to be deported this year.
This came about after the Malaysian government resumed its crackdown against illegal migrants, according to Conrado Cabaquit of the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Zamboanga Regional C onsular Office.
Cabaquit said the deportees were taken to the Processing Center for Displaced Persons of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Barangay Mampang.
The deportees will be temporarily housed at the center until their eventual return to their respective home provinces through the assistance of the DSWD, Cabaquit said.
The DSWD has allocated funds in sending home deportees coming from Malaysia to their respective places of origin.
Thousands of Filipinos were deported last year after the Malaysian government continued its crackdown against illegal migrants.
Cabaquit noted that most of the deported Filipinos who illegally entered Malaysia purposely to look for jobs sneaked out via Tawi-Tawi, the Philippines’ southernmost province. (MindaNews)
