KABACAN, North Cotabato (MindaNews/13 August) — Police and bomb experts recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) beside the national highway in Barangay Kayaga at around 4:20 p.m. Monday.
Police Supt. Raul Supiter, town’s police chief, told MindaNews that residents noticed the IED which was covered with rice straws but partly exposed, and immediately reported to the police.
Supiter added that the IED is made of an 81mm mortar shell, and a mobile phone.
The Barangay Kayaga junction along the Davao-Cotabato highway also to the highway leading to Carmen town.
Supiter said they have been receiving reports that some groups have been planning to sow terror as they are preparing for the town’s 65th Foundation Anniversary on August18.
On Monday noon, Supiter told MindaNews that they have been “beefing up our security measures to ensure the safety of the people.”
In the past, extortionists have been targeting the Rural Transit Bus plying Cagayan de Oro-Tacurong route with IEDs.
On Friday evening, a 40 mm grenade exploded on the roof of an internet café here but no one was hurt since the café was already closed by then.
Supiter suspected that the 40mm was launched using an -79 grenade launcher .
