CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/17 March) — Two hundred forty-nine households were evacuated Wednesday evening when torrential rains caused the Taguilas River in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental to overflow.
The affected residents were from flood-prone Barangays Amoros and Molugan where continuous rains flooded low-lying portions.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council scrambled to rescue the residents and bring them to higher ground as the river continued to swell Wednesday evening.
Barangay and city officials also provided them with relief goods.
Prompt response from local authorities prevented the floods from claiming casualties according to Office of Civil Defense-10 Director Carmelito Lupo.
Lupo also denied reports, some aired on national television, that one person died in the El Salvador flood.
The evacuated residents had gone back to their homes around noon today as the water level in the Taguilas River had subsided.
