CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat (MindaNews/07 May) – “Be a photographer for peace in Central Mindanao!” and win as much as P10,000, so goes the flyers of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division here, for its “Election Day in Central Mindanao” photo contest for peace.
The first prize winner gets P10,000; second gets P5,000; third gets P3,000. There will be special consolation prizes, too.
The entry photos must be taken only on May 10 on the theme “Election Day in Central Mindanao… a photo contest for peace.”
The 6th ID teamed up with the Citizens Coalition for ARMM Electoral Reforms, Inc. (Citizens CARE) and the Lente Images Philippines, Inc., to launch the contest which is open to everyone – “all civilians, members of the media, police and military personnel living and working in Central Mindanao who have a digital camera.”
“Central Mindanao” here refers to the 6th ID jurisdiction – Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and North Cotabato.
The photo contest is the brainchild of Lt. Col. Benjamin Hao, chief of the Division’s Civil-Military Operations.
Entry photos must be in digital formal set in a high resolution (minimum of 300 dpi) with a dimension of at least 2,000 x 1,500 pixels.
All photos for the contest can be submitted directly to the CMO officer of the nearest military unit in your area or through email, photos_61d@yahoo.com.
The contest will be judged on the basis of technical merit (40%), artistic merit (30%), security element (20%) and overall impact (10%)
Technical merit “refers to the use or mix of the different technical aspects of photography such as colors, forms, balance, exposures, lines and shapes.” Artistic merit “pertains to the visual art; perceived quality or value as work of art in relation to the contest theme.”
Security element means entry photo “must include an element of security measure during the conduct of the election” while Overall Impact means the “dramatic impact and the lasting impression of the entry photo” in relation to the contest theme; judge’s call.
Hao told MindaNews that “security element” means “it must talk about the security of voters.”
“To ensure credible and fair judging, the entry photos shall be assigned with codes and the judges shall be coming from the different civil society organizations who have knowledge in photography.”
All photos entered in the contest “become the property of the organizers.”
Only photos taken on May 10 are qualified for the contest. Entries can be submitted from May 10 to 13. The Top 100 will be chosen.
Pre-judging of entry photos by organizers and assigning of codes for the selected Top 50 entries.
The entry photos will be developed and framed o May 16 and 17 for judging on the 18th. May 19 will be the awarding rites.
