Pinol asks Council to use calamity fund for victims of vehicular tragedy

|  November 1, 2006 - 10:25 am

Eighteen persons were killed and 11 others were injured in the vehicular accident that happened Sunday during the town’s fiesta. There were more victims in the October 22 vehicular  accident than the bombing last October 10 at the gym. Six persons were killed while 29 others were injured during the town’s foundation anniversary.

“Most of the victims of the accident are from poor famil
ies who could hardly afford the funeral or hospitalization expenses,” Piñol said in his urgent letter to Vice Governor Jesus Sacdalan and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan members this morning.

Piñol added “it is incumbent upon us
to provide assistance to these people.”

Pinol told MindaNews Monday afternoon that he hopes to be able to give the families of those who died at least P10,000 each and for those wounded, at least P5,000 each.

A 10-wheeler dump truck loaded with sand and driven by Florendo Rondina of Matan-ao, Davao Del Sur lost its brakes and right front tire, rammed into five parked multi-cab vehicles, two tricycles and two motorcycles parked along the national highway.

Most of  those who were killed and wounded were in the parked vehicles. Also among the victims were residents of Malasila who were in Sitio Patulangon due to the fiesta celebration there.

Piñol also called for the holding of a day of prayer for Makilala following the series of tragedies that struck the municipality.
