According to ADZU’s website, Father Provincial Daniel Patrick Huang announced Father Moreno’s election by the ADZU Board of Trustees during their meeting on October 11.
Father Moreno, who had taught at the Ateneo de Zamboanga’s high school department in 1987, will assume the post in May 2007, “at a time to be worked out between him and outgoing President Kreutz.”
Father Moreno, according to a posting in Cagayan de Oro’s heritage e-group, “is a true blue Atenean,” having studied from grade school to college at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City.
“In 1981, he went to Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) for his AB Pre-Divinity; for his novitiate and juniorate; and his MA in Sociology. In 1987, he taught at the Ateneo de Zamboanga High School. He later went to the United Kingdom and earned a Master in Philosophy of Development Studies and proceeded to get a doctorate degree in the same field at the University of Sussex, Brighton (a university known for its groundbreaking interdisciplinary approach, political engagement and activism),” the e-mail about Father Moreno said.
“This young and distinguished SJ has animated the spirit of civic engagement on campus and in the city by initiating lectures, discussions and fora on socio-political issues. Father Tony chairs the One Voice Movement in Cagayan de Oro,” the e-mail said.
The ADZU website said Fr. Kreutz “has been with the University for the past 17 years – the longest President ever to serve the University.”
Under Kreutz, Ateneo de Zamboanga “attained University status, grew in academic excellence, infrastructure development, formation programs for Christians and Muslims alike, and contributed significantly to peace and development in Western Mindanao.”
Father Kreutz will take a break as soon as Father Moreno assumes the post in May, after which he will take over as rector of the Jesuit Residence of the Ateneo de Manila University. (MindaNews)
