The explosive was discovered around 6:30 a.m. and was detonated 7:50 a.m. with the use of a water disruptor.
Kabacan chief of police Senior Inspector Abelio Jungaya told MindaNews that USM head security Rennie Griño found the M72 hand grenade while checking the university grounds.
Members of the Kabacan Police and the Cotabato Anti-Crime Task Force rushed to the campus to secure the spot where the explosive was found.
USM was celebrating its annual intramurals dubbed “Pasiklaban ‘06.” The weeklong sports competition started with a torch parade around Kabacan that ended in the campus where the opening ceremony was held.
Jungaya said university students had started to arrive at USM to prepare for various sports events scheduled on Sunday.
“We are very thankful that the explosive was found earlier because if it exploded perhaps many students would be affected,” the police official said in a text message.
The Kabacan Police was still doing an in-depth investigation of the incident. (Williamor A. Magbanua/MindaNews)
