DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 05 February) – South Cotabato Gov. Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. is set to undergo coronary angioplasty on Monday, 5 February, in this city.
Rudy Jimenea, provincial information officer, said that Tamayo was rushed to the St. Elizabeth Hospital in General Santos City on Friday due to chest pain.
“He was promptly given medications to dissolve the clot found in a blood vessel in his heart,” Jimenea said in a statement.
Tamayo is now in stable condition and his chest pain has gone, he added.
“Pagsik sya, sige pa kami kastorya kahapon (He’s strong. We even have a lively discussion yesterday),” Jimenea said in a phone interview.
He did not provide more details on the health condition of Tamayo, who is on his second term as governor.
The family is asking for privacy, said Jimenea, referring MindaNews to the statement issued by the provincial government Sunday afternoon.
Jimenea, who is the governor’s brother-in-law, said that Tamayo would undergo the percutaneous coronary intervention procedure at a private hospital here.
Vice Governor Arthur Pingoy Jr. will serve as acting governor while Tamayo is on medical leave.
Tamayo, who is turning 44 on February 9, is the president of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, the political party of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Before winning the gubernatorial race in 2019, Tamayo was three-term mayor of Tupi town.
He defeated then reelectionist governor Daisy Avance-Fuentes in 2019 and then Second District Representative Ferdinand Hernandez in 2022. (Bong S. Sarmiento / MindaNews)
