DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 1 February)—Three people have died in the municipality of Maragusan in Davao de Oro because of a landslide caused by heavy rains brought by the trough of the low pressure area.
According to the Maragusan Information Office, the bodies of the fatalities were retrieved Wednesday at the site at Purok Buongon, Sitio Saranga, Barangay Poblacion in Maragusan.
They were identified as Ananias Andoy, 56; Virginia Buhian, 59; and Jerlyn Lada, 12; all residents of the area.
The Maragusan’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) are reportedly searching for another person, identified only as “Felipe,” who was trapped during the landslide in Maragusan.
Meanwhile, the search and rescue continues for two men who were reportedly buried in the soil in Sitio Panlaisan, Barangay Pichon, Caraga, Davao Oriental.
The Office of the Civil Defense in the Davao Region (OCD-Davao) reported Thursday that 2,103 families were affected by the heavy rains in Davao de Oro, 1,368 in Davao Oriental, and 729 in Davao City.
Of the 2,103 affected families in Davao de Oro, 1,164 are from New Bataan, 439 from Monkayo, 218 from Nabunturan, 172 from Compostela, 61 from Pantukan, and 34 from Montevista, and 6 from Maragusan, with 9 families unattributed to any municipality.
For Davao Oriental, OCD reported 1,368 affected families – 1,142 from the provincial capital Mati City, 120 from Governor Generoso, 64 from Cateel, 38 from Caraga, and 4 from Boston. Some 105 families were reportedly in evacuation centers as of latest reports.
Currently, both provinces had three roads each that remain impassable due to landslides and floods.
Five barangays in Davao Oriental experienced power interruption while two barangays in Davao de Oro have water interruptions.
As reported by PAGASA, the trough of the low pressure area affecting most of Mindanao and some parts of Eastern Visayas might cause flooding and landslides, especially in hazardous areas.
The agency reported Thursday morning that possible flash floods or landslides due to heavy to at times intense rains will be experienced in the next 24 hours. (Ian Carl Espinosa / MindaNews)
