ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/23 November) – Two teenagers were wounded in a grenade explosion late Saturday near the residence of an elected official in Barangay Buenavista, this city, the police said.
The incident happened 40 minutes after the Explosive Ordnance Demolition (EOD) Team disrupted a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) found just outside Camp. Gen. Arturo Enrile in Barangay Malagutay, here.
Senior Supt. Angelito Casimiro, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, identified the wounded teenagers as Quennie Levita, 19, and Addim Attain, 16, both residents of Barangay Buenavista.
Casimiro said prior to the explosion Buenavista Barangay Chairman Eugene Jumawan together with some of his Councilmen and neighbors were having a conversation around 8:40 p.m. Saturday at the waiting shed “just outside his residence.”
Casimiro said one of two persons riding in tandem on a red motorcycle that passed near the waiting shed tossed a grenade that resulted to the injury of the victims.
Levita is the niece of Jumawan while Attain is one of the latter’s neighbors.
Forty minutes earlier, Casimiro said military and police EOD personnel disrupted a suspected IED placed in a backpack that was recovered near a store outside Gate 1 of Camp Enrile in Barangay Malagutay.
Casimiro said a village watchman immediately reported to the police detailed at a nearby school after the latter discovered the unattended backpack contains explosives consisting of three fragmentation grenades, five 40-mm ammunition and a handheld radio transceiver. (MindaNews)
