ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/07 June) – The indigenous peoples have elected a Sama Banguingui as their representative to the city council.
Atty. Mohammad Taha Arakama, city director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), said former professor Ismael Musa was elected Thursday in an assembly attended by the IP council of elders in this city.
Arakama said Musa’s election came after a series of meetings and consultations among local IP groups that started in February this year.
Musa is also a first-term councilman of Barangay Kasanyangan.
He stopped teaching at a local university after he was elected last year to the barangay council.
As an IP representative, Arakama said Musa will have the same power and responsibilities as the elected city councilors.
The DILG official said Musa can assume his post once the necessary papers are processed and submitted to the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.
He said Musa is expected to assume office by June 30, 2014 and his term will expire on June 30, 2017. (MindaNews)
