ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/ 2 January) – Three people, including two policemen, were injured when suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits lobbed a grenade towards a police detachment in Lamitan City in Basilan.
The incident took place Monday night, barely an hour before the New Year revelry, at a detachment manned by Special Action Force (SAF) policemen along Rizal Avenue.
The SAF policemen, who are based in Camp Crame, have been assigned for more than a year already to assist the Basilan-based police force in maintaining law and order in the province.
No identities were released by the Lamitan City police of the two injured policemen as well as that of the passerby.
Lamitan City police commander Chief Insp. Kenneth Balisang said the SAF policemen were checking on passing motorists when one of two suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits riding tandem on a motorcycle passed by and tossed a grenade into the detachment.
Balisang disclosed they have received intelligence information that Abu Sayyaf bandits will pass along Rizal Avenue which prompted the policemen to inspect passing motorists. (MindaNews)
