ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/27 June) – Motorcycle-riding gunmen shot and killed a former town mayor of Sulu and critically injured his wife in this city, a top police official disclosed Monday.
Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, Zamboanga City Police Office director, said the incident took place around 8:15 a.m. Monday in front of the public cemetery in Barangay San Roque.
De Ocampo identified the victim as Eng’r. Najiv Maldisa, the former mayor of Maimbung municipality in the province of Sulu.
The former town mayor, who was hit in the head, died shortly after 10 a.m. while undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Critically wounded was Maldisa’s fourth wife, Ahisa, De Ocampo said.
Investigation disclosed the couple was on board their vehicle driven by Ahisa when two “big bikes blocked their way and shot them at close range” while they were passing in front of the cemetery, De Ocampo said.
He said the Maldisa couple came from their residence in Barangay San Roque en route to the city proper.
He said the responding policemen recovered seven empty shells of .45 caliber pistol from the crime scene.
He quoted Ahisa as having said that the attack was politically motivated.
The case investigator was however ordered to look into all possible motives, De Ocampo said. (MindaNews)
