Children by the roadside in Tambo, Iligan City battle it out as to who could play the longest with these clackers on Tuesday morning (4 July 2023). A toy that reportedly originated in the United States in the late 1960s using tempered glass that would eventually shatter, the balls were later changed to plastic for safety. The toy became a craze in the Philippines in the 1970s. It was revived in Indonesia in 2022 where it got the name “latto-latto” (“latto” means clacking sound in the Buginese language of southern Sulawesi), and quickly spread to the Philippines, now called “lato-lato” locally.
