CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/20 Jan) – Two persons died, four are still fighting for dear life while 18 others sustained injuries when a fully loaded jeepney collided head-on with a 10-wheeler truck in Barangay Tablon here.
The Bugo-bound passenger jeepney with plate no. KNU 981 was loaded with 27 passengers when it rammed into the truck with plate number NQE 727 driven by Archie Montecalvo.
The two vehicles collided while cruising along a straight stretch of the four-lane highway fronting the Mindanao Timber Corporation (Mitimco) compound noon today.
Police recorded one dead passenger and two seriously injured brought to the Sabal Clinic in Barangay Puerto; one dead, four injured (one of them serious) to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC); and 15 injured, one of them in serious condition (jeepney driver Jessie Balaba is confined at the intensive care unit), to the Capitol University Medical Center (CUMC).
Sr. Insp. Ulysses Gere identified the fatality brought to the NMMC as Elna Olape, 53. The identity of other woman fatality brought to the Sabal Clinic is still not known as of presstime.
Montecalvo, the truck driver, surrendered to the police around 6 p.m. and is now detained at the Cagayan de Oro City police headquarters.
Gere said they are pressing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple serious physical injuries against Montecalvo. (BenCyrus G. Ellorin / MindaNews)
