XStrata rejects Vale takeover bid

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/13 Feb) — The world's sixth largest mining firm has reportedly rejected a takeover bid of Brazilian mining giant Vale for the former's vast interests worldwide.

In a report that appeared in several websites, XStrata Plc reportedly considered the $40 per share offer of Vale too low and is holding out from the multi-billion takeover talks.

NPA admits killing of military spy

Stronger protection for Mt. Apo sought

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews/13 Feb) — The Mt. Apo Natural Park is getting further protection with sound forest management by local government units (LGUs) around it.

Particularly on the North Cotabato side, the part of the country’s highest peak in this province is now fully covered with the municipality of Magpet agreeing to commit in safeguarding resources of the country’s highest peak, according to a statement issued by the Environmental Governance 2 Project (or EcoGov2) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

4th CRG holds twin symposia vs terrorism in Lamitan

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (4CRG-CRSAFP/PIA-BASULTA/13 Feb) — In support to the government’s intensive campaign against terrorism and dangerous drugs abuse spearheaded by the Joint Task Force “Thunder” under BGen Juancho M. Sabban, the 4th Civil Relations Group’s speakers bureau of the AFP, together with the Civil Affairs representative from  U.S. Forces, recently conducted information drive on Threats to National Security, Fight against Terrorism, Effects of Prohibited Drugs and the Balikatan 2008 activities in two public schools in Lamitan City, Basilan on February 7.
