Referendum to determine political status of Muslims sought

MANILA (Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy/25 October) — Respecting the Bangsamoro’s right to self-determination and holding a referendum are significant steps towards bringing peace to Muslim Mindanao. This was the assertion made by Prof. Abhoud Syed Lingga at a media forum entitled, “Rethinking State Policies and Minority Rights: Getting the Mindanao Peace Process Moving” organized by the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy (PCID). The forum, sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), was held at Club Filipino last October 24.

Bishop says Erap pardon could encourage more corruption

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/25 October) — A Catholic archbishop warned that the presidential pardon granted by President Gloria Arroyo to her ousted predecessor, Joseph Estrada, could encourage more corruption in government.

“What message does this government send? That it condones corruptions?” Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma asked.

DIPOLOG CITY (MindaNews/25 October) — "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Or so the Chinese proverb says.

But for Dipolog Bishop Jose R. Manguiran, 71, "that's obsolete now.” For the Bishop, it should be updated to something like: "Don't just teach him how to fish; teach him how to take care of the seas and the environment."

Police nabs man pretending to be soldier

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews/25 Oct) —  Police arrested Wednesday a man claiming for causing panic among villagers in Barangay Mateo by firing an armalite rifle.

The armed man identified himself as Army 2Lt. Daniel Cozo of the 40th Infantry Battalion assigned in Pikit, North Cotabato,.

The man, later identified as Marino Acquiatan, was also using Cozo’s uniform and name plate.

At the police station, Acquiatan said he was a military intelligence agent and that his “handler” was Cozo.

The Kidapawan City police is filing charges of illegal possession of firearms and violation of the election gun ban against Acquiatan.

Cozo could not be reached for comment. (MindaNews)

Peace panels resolve territory issue
