DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/02 June) – An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck parts of Mindanao at 10:10 p.m Saturday with epicenter east of Carmen in North Cotabato, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s (Phivolcs) Earthquake Information No. 2 issued at 10:30 p.m. said.
Phivolcs recorded Intensity 4 in Matalam, North Cotabato; Intensity 3 in Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat province, Marawi City in Lanao del Sur, Kidapawan City in North Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental and Cotabato City adjoining Maguindanao.
Intensity 2 was recorded in Valencia City, Bukidnon, Polanco in Zamboanga del Norte and Davao City.
The Phivolcs bulletin said damage and aftershocks were expected. Col. Dickson Hermoso, spokesperson of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division told MindaNews at 12:28 a.m. that he was still awaiting reports from the brigade in Carmen town about reported damages caused by the quake.
Intensity 2 was recorded in Valencia City, Bukidnon, Polanco in Zamboanga del Norte and Davao City.
Residents in the affected areas quickly updated their Facebook status when the quake struck so even before Phivolcs or the United States Geographical Survey could say where the quake’s epicenter was, netizens quickly got an overview of where the 10:10 p.m. quake was felt through postings from the cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Cotabato, General Santos, among others
In its 11:10 p.m. bulletin Phivolcs noted another quake of magnitude 4.3, with epicenter located at west of Carmen, North Cotabato.
The Phivolcs bulletin said damage and aftershocks were not to be expected.
At 12:20 a.m., Phivolcs issued Earthquake Information No. 1 stating another quake also of magnitured 4.3 occurred at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, still in Carmen, North Cotabato. (MindaNews)
