PILAR, Siargao Island (MindaNews/23 April) – Local fishermen have to stop going out to sea for the duration of the 7th International Game Fishing Tournament in this town.
Jun Polvorosa, a local fisherman said he has become used to the ban since the tournament has been held for several years already
But he said there would be scarce supply of fish in the market.
Pilar Mayor Lucio Gonzales said they have an ordinance that prohibits fishing in Pilar’s municipal waters during the annual fishing competition.
He, however, said the four-day fishing tournament which kicks off on Thursday, April 24, promises to give excitement and joy to participating anglers.
With the help of the Department of Tourism, Gonzales said they have invited at least 80 participants from different countries which will vie for the total cash prize of P300,000 and trophies.
The mayor said fishing clubs and some fishing magnates have sent word they will join the tournament.
Winners will be chosen based on the total catch weight in four categories: Biggest Billfish, Biggest Talakitok, Biggest Wahoo/Tangigue and Biggest Dorado. (Roel N. Catoto/MindaNews)
