DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 Feb) — The Department of Public Works and Highways will undertake the construction of the 20-hectare Davao City Sports Complex at the University of the Philippines Mindanao in Mintal, a House official said.
Davao City 3rd district Rep. Isidro Ungab, chair of the House committee on appropriations on Saturday said the fund for the project will come from this year’s national budget.
In an interview during the alumni homecoming at UP-Mindanao, Ungab said the university will be submitting its design to the DPWH, which will implement the project by May this year.
He said the UP system will shoulder P50 million of the project. The city government will also give a counterpart fund.
The first phase of the project includes the construction of a P100-million auditorium, P50-million gym and multipurpose hall, and P50-million track and field oval, lighting and outdoor sports area.
The road network will cost P50 million.
“We will need billions of pesos to build an international stadium,” Ungab said.
Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte first announced the plan to build the facility in 2013.
Earlier this month, the city council passed on first reading an ordinance authorizing Duterte to sign on behalf of the city a memorandum of understanding with UP on the sports complex.
An in-house team of architects will be designing the facility.
Ungab said the idea of building the complex came about when he was still a city councilor.
“It has always been funding that was the problem,” he said.
