Survivor leads World Press Freedom day rites

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews/2 May) – A radio commentator who survived a slay attempt in 2005 will be at the center of  the celebration of World Press Freedom Day by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in Kidapawan City. 

The activity will be held in a still undisclosed place where former radio commentator Alberto Martinez can be reached. Martinez has been in hiding since 2008 at the start of the trial of the frustrated murder case against his three assailants.

Canadian walking around the world for peace bound for Iligan

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/2 May) — Jean Béliveau is no ordinary French Canadian from Montreal.

Béliveau has walked 51,000 kilometers across 51 countries, and has used 51 pairs of shoes in the process, to promote world peace since he left home on August. 18, 2000.

The 53-year-old former plumber has been walking across our planet for the past nine years.

Improve reportage by learning Mindanao history, language, governance, peace processes, etc..

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/02 May) – Here’s an invitation to learn good journalism practices and improve reportage on local and Mindanao issues.

The 2nd Mindanao Summer Institute of Journalism, initiated by MindaNews in partnership with the Ateneo de Davao University, is offering from May 3 to 27 a combination of  lectures, trainings and workshops on at least 14 topics, including a basic Mindanao language course.

STATEMENT: Vigorously Oppose House Bill 787!

The Charter change train is on the run again. House Bill 787, authored by Rep. Prospero Nograles and sponsored by Rep. Victor Ortega,  is now being debated on the floor and Resolution 1109, authored by Rep. Luis Villafuerte has been referred to the Committee on Constitutional Amendments.   Both seek to amend the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Not surprisingly, the Arroyos in the House (Mikey, Dado and Iggy) are actively supporting, in fact are behind, both initiatives.  After all, both will open the floodgates to charter change.
