Naval base eyed in Maasim, Sarangani

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (18 January/MindaNews) – The local government of  Maasim in Sarangani province has welcomed the Philippine Navy’s plan to establish a permanent naval base in the town famous for its scuba-diving spots, with a Sangguniang Bayan resolution urging the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to apportion lands owned by the government, for the base.

SouthCot to borrow P130-M for addt'l light and heavy equipment

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/18 January) – The provincial government of South Cotabato plans to secure a loan of at least P130 million to purchase additional light and heavy equipment that will be utilized to fast-track the ongoing repair and rehabilitation of roads and other infrastructure earlier damaged by the floods in the area.

ANGAY-ANGAY LANG: Mindanao historian's dilemma or choice. By B.R. Rodil

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/18 January) — My first column in Mindanews was in January  2002 and my last was in May 2005. Thirteen columns in all.  Now, it is January 2009. I am writing my fourteenth piece.

How do I explain the lull of almost four years? Partly the lull was because I was a member of the GRP (Government of the Republic of the Philippines) Peace Negotiating Panel in talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front  and  the protocol of confidentiality ruled my official life and, admittedly, also my private thoughts.  Being at the same time a Fellow of the International Ford Programme, I was also a full time doctoral student of Philippine Studies in the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus, and busy researching for and writing class reports and term papers.  These two tasks complemented beautifully.
