Biking priest is back in Mindanao, in Surigao City

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/12 May) – Redemptorist priest Amado “Picx” Picardal arrived in Surigao City from Liloan in Southern Leyte Sunday, a day ahead of schedule and is resting and doing laundry work today, Day 50 of his 56-day bicycle journey nationwide “for life and peace.”

He has biked 4,614 kilometers around the country since he left Davao City on Easter Monday, March 24.

SouthCot’sproposed environment code worries mining firm

KORONADAL CITY (MindaNews/11 May) — The proposed environment code of South Cotabato province is making officials of a big mining firm nervous as it will ban the use of open-pit mining.

The foreign-backed Sagittarius Mines, Inc. had earlier expressed it prefers open-pit mining for its Tampakan copper and gold project.

Death in the village of Harmony

BATO VILLAGE, Guiangga, Davao City (MindaNews/11 May) – Since the killing of Datu Dominador Diarog on April 29 in Sitio Kahusayan (Harmony Village), a seven-kilometer walk from here, the sitio has become a virtual “ghost town,” its villagers dispersed to several areas to seek refuge — under the shade of banana plants in neighboring Sitio Dominguez, with relatives and friends in the midst of banana plantations here, and in an elementary school and the Solidarity Action Group for Indigenous Peoples (SAGIP) in downtown Davao City, 36 kilometers away.

Duterte: wait for investigations to finish

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/11 May) – Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has asked the public to wait for the results of the investigation into the killing of Datu Dominador Diarog of Sitio Kahusayan, Barangay Manuel Guiangga in Tugbok District, instead of pointing accusing fingers at anyone.

This, as he asked those who are claiming ownership over the land to produce proof of ownership. “Everybody is bound by the Torrens Title. He who has the title owns the land,” he  said.

Gov. Zubiri backs creation of Bukidnon-NorthCot military task force

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews/10 May) – Bukidnon Gov. Jose Zubiri is backing the resolution passed jointly by the provincial boards of his province and that of North Cotabato calling for the creation of a military task force to run after communist rebels operating in both provinces, which hopefully would do away with the bureaucracy in the military that would limit one unit from crossing another unit’s area of responsibility when pursuing highly mobile rebels.
