MindaNews fact-checked a claim that siomai and other street foods sold in Tagum City, Davao del Norte were made from dog meat. The Tagum City Health Office belied the claim.

A post by the Facebook page TAGUM Updated on March 2 at 11:55 a.m. showing a photocard that says “SUPPLIER SA MGA SIOMAI UG UBAN PANG STREET FOODS SA TAGUM CITY, NAHIBAW-AN NGA GIKAN DIAY SA KARNE SA IRO (Supplier of siomai and other street food in Tagum City was discovered to have sourced them from dog meat!) is still being shared online.

TAGUM Updated has deleted the post, but it was reposted by Facebook user Alexis Cabardo on his page on March 5. As of 6:48 a.m. on March 28, Cabardo’s repost has generated 5,100 shares, 786 reactions and 67 comments.

Cabardo, who describes himself as a digital creator, has 11,000 followers as of the same date.

As reported by MindaNews on March 6, the City Health Office of Tagum denied the report, calling it “fallacious information” and “fake news”.

“Please be advised that the circulating news about the siomai products containing dog meat is not validated,” Dr. Arnel Florendo said in a statement posted March 5 on their Facebook page.

As with all our other reports, MindaNews welcomes leads or suggestions from the public to potential fact-check stories. (H. Marcos C. Mordeno  / MindaNews)
