Bangsamoro Minister of the Interior and Local Government Naguib Sinarimbo has slammed a fake quote card circulated on Facebook, which was attributed to him and imparts hate message against Christians.
Facebook user “Fahima Salik tv” posted the fake quote card on Sunday, December 3, hours after a bomb exploded inside the main campus of the Mindanao State University in Marawi City.
At least four people were killed and 42 others were wounded during the explosion while a Catholic mass was ongoing inside MSU-Marawi.
“Walang lugar ang mga kristiyano sa Marawi City BARMM kaya siguro nagkaroon ng ganyang insidente (Christians have no place in Marawi City, BARMM, which is perhaps the reason why that incident happened),” the fake quote card said.
BARMM stands for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, which replaced the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in 2019 following the referendum that ratified Republic Act 11054 or the Organic Law for the BARMM.
“For the record, neither this Ministry nor any Bangsamoro Government official ever said these heinous things about our Christian brothers and sisters,” Sinarimbo said in a statement.
“It is disheartening that some would take advantage of such heinous acts of terrorism and spend their time disseminating disinformation rather than spreading messages of unity in the pursuit of justice for all,” he added.
MindaNews has earlier fact-checked another claim posted by Fahima Salik tv.
We learned that Fahima Salik tv is the new Facebook account of Fahima Salik. The Fahima Salik page was taken down by Facebook on June 16, after it was reported to have been spreading baseless accusations and hate speech against BARMM officials. The malign actor quickly generated a new account on June 17, and now has at least 5,500 followers.
Sinarimbo, a lawyer, reminded the public that intentionally distributing false information or making libelous statements is illegal.
The Council on Climate Conflict and Action Asia (CCCA), a non-government organization monitoring conflicts in the Philippines, also expressed concern of attempts to polarize the situation and sow the seeds of a Muslim-Christian conflict following the MSU-Marawi bombing.
“Our Early Response Network has already reported an alarming rise in calls for revenge and hate speech on the ground and social media,” CCCA said in a statement.
Bangsamoro Interim Chief Minister Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim also appealed to the public to use social media responsibly and to refrain from fueling conflict and divisiveness.
