Chief Supt. German Doria, Central Mindanao police director, identified the slain fugitive as Nani Munday, 43, alias “Kumander King,” a bandit leader in the area wanted for murder charges.
Police Officer 2 Richard Santiago was wounded in the right shoulder during the operation.
Government troops engaged the group of Munday at around 7:30 am that lasted for 30-minutes in the jungle portion of Barangay Laconon, Doria said. Members of the 1205th Provincial Police Mobile Group and the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion engaged Munday.
“It was a successful joint police and military intelligence operations. He was killed because he resisted our forces,” Mr. Doria said.
Munday was suspected as behind “the string of criminal activities happening in the upper valley area of the province and other parts of the region”.
The other armed followers of Munday escaped as more troops were deployed in the area to pursue the fleeing bandits, Doria said.
Recovered from the encounter site was a Carbine rifle supposedly owned by Munday, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body.
