There was no meteor captured on camera during the Magnitude 7.4 earthquake that rocked parts of Mindanao at 10:37 p.m. on Saturday.
Facebook user Yrram Neaj Sonreb Itmana posted the false photo following the tremor that shook parts of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.
“What is the meaning of this. Na capture lang saku night cam sa Huawei paglinog (My Huawei phone’s night camera captured this during the earthquake),” the caption reads.
The post had been taken down at 9 a.m. Sunday, December 3, but not before some Facebook users have been able to take screenshots of it.
Before it was taken down, the post gathered at least 4.7k shares on Facebook.
Among those that picked up the fake post was Facebook pages Iligan Daily Notification and Booming Mindanao Developments.
The photo was actually taken by photographer Prasenjeet Yadav in India in 2017.
According to an article by WIRED magazine, the photo was taken accidentally as Yadav had setup a time lapse photo “when this bright green meteor exploded over Mettupalayam, a small town in the mountainous Western Ghats region of southern India.”
