CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews / 19 January) — A Coast Guard boat is searching for 11 missing recreational divers after their boat capsized off Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental on Monday.

Apprentice Lei Brosas, of the Philippine Coast Guard operations in Davao City, said BRP Malamawi is searching the southern portion of the Davao Gulf for the divers believed to be clinging on top of their capsized boat.
“As of now, we are still searching the general area where we received a mobile phone message from the divers,” Brosas told MindaNews by phone.
She said the divers left Governor Generoso town around 1 p.m. Monday aboard MBCA Amejara bound for a diving site area off the town.
She said that later in the afternoon, Coast Guard stations in Governor Generoso received a mobile phone message saying that the boat had capsized and that the passengers were clinging to its wooden hull to survive.
A diver’s group in Davao City who had been monitoring the incident said they feared that the capsized banca may have reached Santa Maria in Davao Occidental, situated opposite of Governor Generoso town across the Davao Gulf. (Froilan Gallardo / MindaNews)
