DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 30 October) — As the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) approaches a pivotal milestone with its first parliamentary elections in 2025, MindaNews, the training arm of the Mindanao Institute of Journalism, conducted two comprehensive two-day training sessions titled “Reporting the 1st BARMM Parliamentary Elections” on October 12-13 and October 26-27, 2024, at The Royal Mandaya Hotel (Sultan Hall), Davao City.
These trainings were specifically designed to prepare journalists to cover the 2025 BARMM elections with accuracy, sensitivity, and depth. Developed as the initial course offering under the Media Development Philippines program, the curriculum featured a blend of asynchronous online learning modules and dynamic in-person workshops, offering participants a robust and interactive educational experience.
The training began with an introduction to BARMM, delivered by Ms. Carolyn Arguillas, Special Reports Editor of MindaNews, who provided historical context and highlighted the cultural significance of the region. This was followed by an in-depth discussion on BARMM’s electoral history and dynamics, where participants gained insights into the political landscape, notable electoral events, and the role of political families and dynasties.
Atty. Kahlil Denise Alcomendras, representing Member of Parliament Mary Ann Arnado, then shed light on the governance and development journey of BARMM, tracing its evolution from the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro to the establishment of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, while discussing its achievements and challenges.
Further sessions focused on the preparations by the Commission on Elections, with Atty. Joyce Moran presenting updates on the Bangsamoro Electoral Code, its Implementing Rules and Regulations, and the upcoming election calendar.
Additionally, the Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) provided an in-depth lecture and discussion on key provisions of the BARMM Electoral Code and its Implementing Rules and Regulations. LENTE directors Atty. Ona Caritos and Brizza Rosales also shared their extensive experience in election monitoring and voter education activities, offering critical insights on how these efforts contribute to electoral transparency and integrity.
The importance of fact-checking during elections was underscored by Yas D. Ocampo from MindaNews, who shared essential tools and methods to combat misinformation and ensure the accuracy of news reporting.
Dr. Jose Jowel Canuday provided valuable guidance on post-election reporting, emphasizing effective story mapping and strategies for covering socio-political and economic developments in the aftermath of the elections.
The BARMM elections mark a significant chapter in the region’s pursuit of self-governance and peace. Accurate, well-informed reporting is crucial not only for promoting transparency and democratic integrity but also for fostering public trust. This training highlighted the essential role journalists play, whether they are from BARMM or other regions, in shaping informed civic discourse and supporting democratic processes.
A total of 34 reporters from diverse media platforms—including radio, print, online, and television—participated in the two training batches. Journalists came from various BARMM cities and regions, including Cotabato City, Tawi-Tawi, Davao, Caraga, and Northern Mindanao, contributing to a rich exchange of perspectives and fostering regional collaboration.
The benefits of participation extended beyond professional growth, as attendees enhanced their reporting skills, deepened their understanding of BARMM’s political dynamics, and built valuable connections with fellow journalists and media experts. Participants also received certificates recognizing their commitment to maintaining high standards in election reporting.
As BARMM moves closer to its historic election, the Media Impact PH project remains dedicated to supporting the media community with the resources and training needed to uphold the principles of democracy, transparency, and informed public engagement. This project is implemented by the Mindanao Institute of Journalism, the training arm of MindaNews, and funded by International Media Support through the European Union and DANIDA. (MindaNews)
