GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews / 26 June) – Combined effects of low pressure area (LPA) and Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) triggered the rains in many parts of Mindanao, a bulletin by the state weather agency said.
On Wednesday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said an LPA was spotted around 8am to be about 365 kilometers off General Santos City.
Citing a weather update from Pagasa, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) here said that as of 3pm, the LPA was estimated to be at 235 kilometers east of General Santos City (6.3°N, 127.2°E).
Pagasa said the LPA that formed within the ITCZ was moving slowly westward and was not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone.
The update said the LPA remains embedded along the ITCZ affecting Mindanao
Gensan CDRRMO cautioned residents that this city and many areas in Mindanao will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms while wind will be light to moderate from south to southeast with slight to moderate coastal conditions.
The CDRRMO announcement warned residents of possible flash floods and landslides.
The weather condition caused overcast skies and brought rains since early morning in many parts in the Soccsksargen region, Davao, Caraga and in northern Mindanao.
The ITCZ is a belt near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere meet. It is considered a breeding ground for tropical cyclones. (Rommel Rebollido/MindaNews)
