MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews / 7 June) – The El Niño in the tropical Pacific Ocean has ended, as both oceanic and atmospheric indicators have returned to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-neutral levels, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its final advisory on the weather phenomenon.
Pagasa added there is a 69-percent likelihood of a transition from ENSO-neutral to La Niña conditions from July to September.
For June, the state weather bureau said easterlies, ridge of high pressure area, localized thunderstorms, and one or two tropical cyclones may affect the country.
But while the El Niño has ended, two provinces have the potential for meteorological drought conditions while four others may experience dry spell conditions. All of these provinces are in Luzon, it said.
The forecast temperature ranges for June are as follows: 23.1⁰C – 37.3⁰C over Metro Manila; 15.0⁰C – 28.7⁰C in the mountainous areas of Luzon; 19.0⁰C – 39.7⁰C for the rest of Luzon; 21.1⁰C – 38.8⁰C in the Visayas; 17.0⁰C – 34.5⁰C over the mountainous areas of Mindanao and 21.0⁰C – 39.4⁰C over the rest of the island.
Several areas in Mindanao experienced heat indices breaching the 40⁰C level in the past few months. (MindaNews)
