GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews / 11 March) – A police intelligence officer assigned in Cotabato province was killed in a gun attack along the circumferential road in Barangay Sinawal here Sunday night.
Col. Nicomedes Olaivar Jr., city police director, said Corporal Ricky Mendoza Gomez was traversing a portion of the circumferential road aboard a motorcycle past 6 p.m. when he was waylaid by gunmen reportedly carrying high-powered firearms.
The incident happened near a housing subdivision, and police and Army outposts.
Witnesses said the suspects were already waiting for the victim, who was heading towards the direction of Barangay Fatima aboard a gray Yamaha Nmax scooter with license plate 258MTH, before the attack.
Investigators and scene-of-the-crime operatives recovered at the scene multiple spent shells of an M16 Armalite rifle.
Olaivar said the slain policeman was assigned at the Carmen municipal police station in Cotabato province and undergoing Basic Intelligence Course at the Police Regional Office 12 in Barangay Tambler.
He said the victim, who previously served as intelligence chief of Pikit municipal police station, had been based in the city in the last two months for his “schooling.”
The police official said the investigation is ongoing regarding the possible motives and the identities of the suspects, currently the subject of a region-wide manhunt. (MindaNews)
