DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 21 March)—A 19-year-old senior high school student turned himself in to police authorities after he was caught on video drag racing with another unknown rider around 1 a.m. on Wednesday along J.P. Laurel here.
Video footage of the drag race went viral on social media after it was uploaded on Facebook page “Davao Idiot Drivers” hours after the incident.
In an interview with reporters, Jaymar Purgatrio Cabrillos said that he immediately surrendered to the police, bringing with him the Yamaha Raider F1 motorcycle after the video footage went viral.
He said the motorcycle was owned by his mother.
Cabrillos told reporters that he went out to refuel at the Shell Gas Station in Bajada when another motorcycle driver whom he did not know approached and challenged him to a race.
He said they raced from the gasoline station for a few moments until they reached the nearby Tebow Cure Hospital, almost 2 kilometers away.
He said he went home shortly after the race.
Cabrillos said it was his first time to drag race on a public road.
Maj. Antonio Y. Luy, station commander, said that police will file charges against Cabrillos, including reckless driving, possible alarm, and unjust vexation.
He told the riders to avoid drag racing on public roads as it could possibly cause accidents and harm pedestrians.
He said they are investigating to determine the identity of the other rider who raced with Cabrillos. (Antonio L. Colina IV / MindaNews)
