DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 6 February) – Dabawenyo fans of Japanese films are in for a treat as the 27th Japanese Film Festival (JFF) will bring back 13 iconic anime films during a 10-day free screening from February 23 to March 3 in Davao City, JFF 2024 coordinator Angely Chi said.
Speaking during Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday, Chi said the Davao leg of JFF will showcase nostalgic films that were released and became popular in the 1970s, 1990s, and even in the early 2000s, as well as films released recently from 2020 to 2023 at the Cinema 3 of the SM City Davao.
Davao is one of the venues of this year’s JFF 2024 in the country. The other venues are Shangri-la Red Carpet Cinema, SM City Baguio, SM City Iloilo, SM Seaside City Cebu, and UP Film Institute Film Center.
The festival opened at the Shangri-la Plaza Atrium last February 1.
Chi said this year’s lineup is “geared towards the younger audiences.”
She said that save for the “Angry Son,” which is rated 13, the rest of the films can be watched by Dabawenyo movie fans of all ages.
She said the “Angry Son,” released in 2022, is a story about Jungo, a Filipino-Japanese high school student in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, and his mother, an overseas Filipino worker who works as a hostess at a bar.
“His mother has never told him about his father, and the only connection he has to his father is the monthly child support payments,” she said.
She said Jungo sets out to find his real father after his mother, Reina, wants to remarry.
Chi added that the Voltes V: Legacy – The Cinematic Experience (2023), a Philippine adaptation of the popular anime film, will be screened on the last day of the film festival in Davao. The festival will screen The First Slam Dunk (2022), Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom (2023), We Made a Beautiful Bouquet (2021), Detective Conan The Movie: The Time-Bombed Skyscraper (1997), Detective Conan The Movie: The Private Eyes’ Requiem (2004), And Yet, You Are So Sweet (2023), Not Quite Dead Yet (2020), MONDAYS: See You “This” Week! (2022), The Father of the Milky Way Railroad (2022), A Man (2022), and Voltes V: The Liberation (1977-1978). (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews)
