CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews / 10 February) – Noisy firecrackers and colorful fireworks lit up the sky here as the local Filipino- Chinese community greeted the Year of the Wooden Dragon on Friday night.

Shouts of “ Kung Hei Fat Choi” rang through the city as residents and members of the Filipino-Chinese community came out to the streets to celebrate.

The Bell Church in Barangay Macasandig this city, gave out hundreds of boxes of “tikoy,” a popular cake made of glutinous rice flour, water and sugar, to visitors of their temple.

“This is a good event for the local Filipino-Chinese community to celebrate together,” John Asuncion, Cagayan de Oro Trade Investments Promotion chief, said.[]

Asuncion said that for the Filipino-Chinese community, the Year of the Wooden Dragon is expected to bring prosperity and abundance.

The Year of the Golden Dragon succeeded the Year of the Rabbit.

The Cagayan de Oro local government spearheaded this year’s celebration of the Chinese New Year, sponsoring the fireworks display at the Paseo de Oro Boulevard Friday night and a dragon boat race along the Cagayan de Oro River on Sunday.[]

Asuncion said that at least 500 paddlers, officials and guests coming from all over the country are joining the race.

These visitors will help boost the local economy with their spending, Asuncion said.
