The Facebook post of famous Canadian vlogger BecomingFilipino that Mindanao has 27 provinces is wrong.
Mindanao comprises 28 provinces as of September 2023, after Maguindanao province was divided into Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte with the ratification of Republic Act 11550 (An Act Dividing the Province of Maguindanao Into Two Provinces, namely: Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur).
BecomingFilipino is the social media account of Kyle Douglas Jennerman, popularly known as “Kulas,” a Canadian who was granted Filipino citizenship last year.
The account can be found on Facebook and YouTube, with 1.7 million followers and 1.11 million subscribers, respectively.
On Sunday, January 21, Facebook page BecomingFilipino posted 100 different things you can do or experience in Mindanao.
He started his post with this:
“MINDANAO.
It consists of 27 Provinces, a population of more than 26 million people, and a land area of more than 97,500 square kilometers.”
But Mindanao officially has 28 provinces in six regions to date, which are:
- Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao: Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
- Region 9 or Zamboanga Peninsula: Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay.
- Region 10 or Northern Mindanao: Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.
- Region 11 or Davao region: Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.
- Region 12 or Soccsksargen: North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani.
- Region 13 or Caraga: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.
BecomingFilipino’s Facebook post, which generated 10,123 reactions, 723 comments and 1,518 shares as of 2:15 p.m. Tuesday (January 23), followed the adverse travel advisory issued by the Canadian Embassy to the Philippines, especially against Mindanao.
The travel advisory drew flak from different sectors in Mindanao, the second largest island-grouping in the country.
The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) shared the Facebook post of BecomingFilipino on Tuesday, writing on its page: “Thank you, Kulas, for letting the whole world know how peaceful, beautiful, and bountiful Mindanao is!”
But MinDA, a government agency based in Davao City tasked to coordinate and facilitate the socioeconomic development of Mindanao, did not rectify the wrong figure of Kulas that Mindanao is composed of 27 provinces.
