ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 26 November) — Fraternities in the city signed Thursday an agreement to work together in programs that aim to contribute to the attainment of peace.
“As we speak of peace and in connection with the celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace, one of the key actors left behind in the many years of celebrating is the fraternities and their societies. In mind now, we have to give spaces and platforms for collective action for peace and solidarity,” Dr. Grace Rebollos, president of Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Alliance said.
Rebollos said there are three program interventions that will be launched in January 2022 that the fraternities may join.
She said fraternity leaders may join the education and governance program through the Peace Education Fellowship, which tackles the culture of peace.
Another area is Environmental Peace Actions, which uses an academic approach to environmental programs with sustainable impacts. The fraternities will also adopt and undertake initiatives suited to their respective groups and launch their own advocacy for the environment, she said.
They may also choose Food Security, where they could acquire technical skills about urban gardening, adopt farm site where they can apply such skills, and eventually launch a communal garden, she added.
The signing of the peace covenant, which was witnessed by leaders of the Interreligious Solidarity for Peace formed part of the 2021 Mindanao Week of Peace celebration.
The signatories include leaders of the Tau Gama Phi, Zeta Phi Omega, Tyro Gyn Fraternity, Upsilon Phi Sigma, and KRK Fihmo who comprise the Council of the Greeks-Zamboanga City. (Frencie Carreon/MindaNews)
