ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 7 Jan) – Government operatives here intercepted on Tuesday a vessel loaded with smuggled sugar valued at more than P2 million.
Insp. Dahlan Samuddin, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) information officer, said the joint police, military and coast guard personnel were on patrol along the coast of Barangays Bolong and Sangali when they spotted the vessel at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Samuddin said M/L Ylaiza Maye V was loaded with 1,146 sacks of sugar, each containing 50 kilos.
The estimated worth of the intercepted shipment was placed at P2,463,900 based on the prevailing market price of P43 a kilo.
Samuddin said the vessel’s crew failed to present pertinent papers on the shipment of sugar. The vessel has eight crew and six laborers.
He said investigation showed the shipment of sugar allegedly came from Malaysia and was shipped via Taganak, Tawi-tawi.
He said the confiscated shipment was turned over to the Bureau of Customs.
