ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 16 December) – One of the two Zamboangueño weightlifters seeing action in the 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games has bagged the silver medal Sunday in the 58-kilogram category.
The 27th SEA Games, which is being held in Myanmar, kicked-off last December 11 and is set to end on Sunday, December 22.
Prof. Elbert Atilano Sr. – Diaz’s former coach when she was studying and an athlete scholar at the Universidad de Zamboanga – announced here Monday that Hidilyn Diaz won the silver medal after she lifted 102-kg in Snatch and 122-kg in the Clean and Jerk with a total lift of 224-kg.
Diaz, 22, is now an enlisted personnel of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) aside from being a member of the National Weightlifting Team.
Atilano said it was the strong determination of Diaz determination made her win the silver medal in the ongoing SEA Games.
He said Diaz already had strong determination and perseverance as a student back then.
Diaz, a daughter of a tricycle driver from Barangay Mampang here, was at the top of her class when she was still studying.
She became a member of the National Weightlifting Team in 2007.
The other Zamboangueño weightlifter seeing action in the Myanmar Sea Games is Jeffrey Garcia, who finished 4th place in the 62-kg category.
