Davao City Council approves P53-M for 15 flooded villages

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 January) — The City Council approved on Monday the release of P53.53 M to assist some 40,000 residents in the 15 barangays struck by floods on Saturday night and Sunday.

The amount, taken from the city’s P217.3 M Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Fund, is intended for relief and recovery program for some12,000 families or about 40,000 persons affected by the floods.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) met Monday morning to consolidate reports and determine the amount of assistance needed.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio immediately sent the City Council a letter requesting the release of the requested amount, the latter immediately acting on it by convening a special session in the afternoon.

Fifteen flood-stricken barangays — Tigatto, Waan, Mandug, 19-B, 1-A, 5-A, 8-A, 9-A, 10-A, 2-A, 74-A, 76-A, Maa, Lasang, and Calinan — were placed under a state of calamity.[]

The city has 182 barangays.

Ma. Luisa Bermudo, head of the City Social Services and Development Office, requested P1 million for families whose houses were destroyed. She said 48 houses made of light materials were totally damaged while 49 were partially damaged.

Dr. Cerelyn Pinili, officer in charge of the City Veterinarian’s Office, estimated the damages to livestock and poultry at P654,900.[]

This includes cattle, 55 hogs, 41 goats, 50 ducks and 1,882 chickens.[]

Based on survey, Pinili said a total of 255 farmers lost their livestock to the floods.

Valente Turtur, officer in charge of the City Agriculturist’s Office, said some 250 hectares of farmlands were damaged: P3-M worth of corn, banana and vegetables in Barangay Tigatto; P1.3M worth in Waan and P600,000 worth in San Isidro.
