MALAYBALAY CITY(MindaNews/ 5 October)—A volunteer broadcaster of DXDB radio station here filed on Friday his certificate of candidacy (COC) for a provincial board seat in the second district of Bukidnon.
Roy Calimpong, host of “Pulso sa Lungsod” (Pulse of the Town), obtained a nomination from the Aksyon Demokratikong Pilipino party. Calimpong is an employee of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Bukidnon and works with DXDB as a volunteer anchor on weekends. In an earlier interview, Calimpong said that before his DAR employment, he was a political leader in Misamis Occidental, having served as a provincial board member there. In Bukidnon, Calimpong has worked as speaker of the Catholic On-going Formation Seminar (COFS).
Radio listeners follow his hard-hitting program in DXDB on Saturday mornings. Calimpong is known as among the few commentators who tackled critical topics on powerful personalities like Vice Gov. Jose Ma. R. Zubiri Jr, who threatened him several times with libel charges.
Critics, including fellow commentators, dismissed Calimpong as allegedly a biased media practitioner.
Calimpong told Bukidnon News Thursday he is running to provide voters an alternative voice, “as a fiscalizer at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.” Aside from him, two other candidates from the broadcast industry have filed their COCs lst Wednesday, incumbent board members Rene Centillas of the second district and Gordon Torres of the third district.
