ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/13 November) – The family of the late Basilan governor and representative Wahab Akbar has lined up community outreach programs to commemorate his fourth death anniversary Sunday, including a free viewing of the Pacquiao-Marquez fight at the provincial gymnasium.
Akbar was serving his first term in Congress when he was killed by a powerful bomb explosion that ripped through the south wing of the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City on November 13, 2007.
His widow, Basilan Gov. Jum Akbar. said the provision of free viewing of the Manny Paquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight at the provincial gym was part of the outreach program.
A wide screen has been installed and connected to a cable television channel at the provincial capitol’s gymnasium.
A distribution of free rubber tree seedlings followed the Paquiao-Marquez fight.
Data gathered by the provincial government showed that there are 9,742 individual farmers in the province planting rubber.
There are also agrarian reform cooperatives that are into rubber farming in Basilan province.
The provincial government has established a nursery where to propagate rubber tree seedlings to be distributed to the farmers in Basilan.
Akbar said the free distribution of the seedlings is in line with the dream of her late husband to make the province of Basilan the country’s rubber capital.
