ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/6 September) – A barangay chairman of Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte was wounded in a shooting incident carried out by two motorcycle-riding gunmen at dawn Sunday in this city, police said.
City police director Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo said the victim, Edgar Perla, 41, the barangay chairman of Tagarak, Sibuco was shot around 4 a.m. along Nuñez Extension downtown.
De Ocampo said that Perla was shot at close range after he parked the motorcycle he was driving on the roadside to answer a text message.
Perla was on his way to the Joaquin F. Enriquez, Jr. Memorial Sports Complex for an early morning jog coming from his residence in Barangay Divisoria, the police official said.
De Ocampo added the unidentified assailants also took the motorcycle used by Perla which actually belongs to Hazel Therez Edding, the wife of Sibuco Mayor Norbideri Edding.
Perla was rushed to the hospital for treatment by some passersby who saw him lying wounded on the pavement, he said.
De Ocampo has ordered a thorough investigation of the incident to unmask the attackers, although robbery is eyed as one of the possible motives. (MindaNews)
